On 18th December, 1914, the 1st Royal Fusiliers battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division, moved into the trenches near Chapelle d’Armentières where they remained until relieved on 23rd December. Thomas Morris was killed on 20th December when the enemy shelled the farm occupied by Battalion HQ and one platoon. Some of HQ staff and those sick went into the cellar where a shell then landed, killing two and wounding another eight. |
